When Breath Becomes Air: part 1

Hi there friends!

I'm on holiday so will be brief, but I've been reading through the book for this quarter and just finished the first part: “In perfect helath I begin”

The text is so full of insightful points and the title is particularly profound. He began his work inperfect health, and ended his work so ill.

The themes that I noticed in this part are:

  • Medical responsibility

  • strive/struggle towards excellence

  • The impact of having a role to play in the life and death of another

  • Baring witness to suffering

  • Accepting that treatment/cure-seeking is not always in the best interests of supporting the living

  • Life is about meaning and value

  • Power - the power of being an informed HCP, the power given to us by patients

This chapter really set of a lot of deep reflection and he touches on points that are important to us at Pain Geeks. That medicine and healthcare is meaningless and potentially harmful if we lose sight of the humanity of the other, and ourselves.
